Uptown Charlotte, explained

If you're new to the area you may not know what Uptown Charlotte is and what you can find there. This article should clear things up. Sort of.

Downtown Charlotte, also called Center City is known to the locals as Uptown Charlotte  and as simply 'Uptown'. I know, I know, enough already...

Uptown serves as the bustling central business district of Charlotte, North Carolina. The district is delineated by the intersection of Trade and Tryon Streets, dividing it into four distinct wards. It is further delineated by Interstate 277 and Interstate 77, forming its perimeters.

This vibrant Uptown area is bursting with energy, hosting a myriad of businesses, cultural institutions, and recreational spaces that attract residents and visitors alike. Its strategic location and dynamic atmosphere make it the beating heart of Charlotte's metropolitan landscape.

 Here's a breakdown of Uptowns four wards, each with its own unique characteristics and attractions, and some popular things to do in each:

  1. First Ward:

    • First Ward Park: This 4.6 acre centrally located park offers green spaces, walking trails, dog park and a playground. It's a great spot for picnics, outdoor activities, and community events.
    • Spectrum Center: Home to the NBA's Charlotte Hornets, this arena hosts basketball games, concerts, and other events throughout the year.
    • Queen City Quarter, formerly known as EpiCentre, is a hub for entertainment, dining, and nightlife, QCQ has undergone extensive renovations and features restaurants, bars, clubs, and shops, a parking garage, courtyard and hotel.
  2. Second Ward:

    • NASCAR Hall of Fame: Located in the Second Ward, this museum celebrates the history and heritage of NASCAR through exhibits, interactive experiences, and memorabilia.
    • Levine Museum of the New South: This museum explores the history and culture of the American South, with a focus on Charlotte and the surrounding region.
    • Romare Bearden Park: Named after the Charlotte born renowned artist Romare Bearden, this urban park offers green spaces, walking paths, and a splash pad. It's a popular spot for relaxation and events.
  3. Third Ward:

    • Bank of America Stadium: Home to the NFL's Carolina Panthers, this stadium hosts football games and other events. Guided tours are available for visitors to explore the stadium.
    • BB&T Ballpark: Catch a baseball game at this stadium, home to the Charlotte Knights, a Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. The ballpark offers beautiful views of the Charlotte skyline.

  4. Fourth Ward:

    • Fourth Ward Park: This historic neighborhood is known for its charming Victorian homes and tree-lined streets. Fourth Ward Park offers 3 acres of green spaces, walking paths, childrens plat structures and a peaceful atmosphere.
    • Historic Homes Tour: Explore the beautifully preserved Victorian homes of Fourth Ward on a guided tour, learning about the neighborhood's history and architecture.
    • Spirit Square: This cultural arts center hosts performances, exhibits, and events showcasing theater, music, dance, and visual arts.
